First, I'll say I appreciate the opportunity to try games free before buying them. Kudos for that.

I will admit that I only played a few character classes up to level two or so. Nothing about the game made me ooh or ahh. There was an aspect to the game that I found very annoying. Every time you talk to an NPC for a quest/mission, you got into a cinematic. You end up watching the game instead of playing it. I thought that went out in the 90's.

I did fill out their survey. In the short amount of time I played I ran into no bugs or lag issues. There's just nothing about it I find interesting enough to make me want to sit through all of those cinematics. I won't be purchasing the game. For those who enjoy this style of game then congratulations...this will be perfect for you.

That's my two cents for what its worth.

Amamake 2011-11-06 21:04

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I'm re-posting my response here...well...because I can.

CCP appears to rely on developers, CSMs and IT personnel for communications with the players. It is not working. CCP needs to hire professional communications employees. They need skilled public information personnel or they will continue to fail.

I don't know what education or training the GM's, developers and forum moderators have but many of them lack basic communication skills. I get responses from GM's that make me wonder if they read anything past the first sentence. It is incredibly frustrating.

I submitted a petition for a ship loss the other day because I thought a thief used an exploit. Prior to submitting the petition, I read the Aggression Timer information in the EVElopedia. I found nothing to support what the pilot was doing.

So, I got popped by a thief because I didn't know he could use my wrecks to continue the aggression timer. I petitioned to ask for help. This was the response.
I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm afraid that so far it is a normal mechanism that a pilot can extend the aggression timer toward another one by shooting at containers or wreckage belonging to him. Thus we are not able to offer reimbursement.
(My intention here is not to embarrass or blame the GM. My intention is to blame CCP for not educating their employees.)

The response could have been much more clear (and I have asked for further clarification in the petition).

Example:

Pilot A is running a mission. Pilot B enters the mission and steals from one of Pilot A's wrecks which initiates the aggression timer. At this point, Pilot B can be shot by Pilot A but Pilot A can not be shot by Pilot B.

Pilot A shoots Pilot B. Now both pilots have aggression timers towards each other.

Pilot A leaves system and docks to wait out the timer. Pilot A undocks with no aggression timer remaining. Pilot A jumps back into the system with the mission to discover the aggression timer has returned and it specifies Pilot B. Pilot A docks thinking there is an aggression timer bug.

An hour later, Pilot A returns to the mission (failing to notice the aggression timer renewed by Pilot B). Pilot B fires on and destroys Pilot A's ship. Pilot A is very confused.

The GM's response to the inquiry was unclear due to the use of phrases that failed to accurately identify the parties involved. The GM also failed to provide a solution. My best guess is that what really happened was Pilot B would fire on one of Pilot A's wrecks to restart the aggression timer even though Pilot A was not in system. The solution would be for Pilot A to abandon the mission wrecks so that Pilot B couldn't use them to renew the timer.

[:x] This would have been nice to know in advance via the EVElopedia, ya think?!? Please feel free to insert an image of Yosemite Sam jumping up and down while yelling because this is how I feel.

Here's another fine example of a failure in communication by CCP.
Please note that although we are discontinuing support of Shader Model 2 we will not actively block those cards from running the client. It is therefore possible that players with that hardware will be able to run EVE for some time afterward. We do, however, urge them to update their graphics cards as soon as possible.
source: http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=882
What really happened? Computers with shader model 2 support were unable to launch the client after the June 21,2011 patch. Again, this would have been nice to know in advance! (Please review Yosemite Sam.)

The same thing happened with computer processors that could not run SSE2 commands. Advance notice would have been nice. Let me rephrase that. Advance notice to the player community about hardware requirement changes would have been the preferred, professional action.

I have joined the vote of no confidence in CCP. My subscription ends August 10th. I'm giving CCP until then to address and correct communications between the player base and CCP. If they are serious about getting their act together, they will hire a communications professional and sort this mess out. It is a shame to see such a cool game get so fouled up due to an unprofessional developing company.

end transmission

LOL

These are funny.

http://www.wpod.com/sigs/index.html

I am not amused

I really didn't know what to call this post. There is so much going on in the EVE player base right now it just isn't even funny.

The Aggression Timer system is broken. I posted on the official forums here: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1540633&page=1

Shader Model 3 is now required to launch the client even though the devs said they would not block shader model 2 cards from running the game (back on April 5th).

More here: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1538907&page=1#10

These two issues combined with the useless captains quarters and ridiculous vanity items led me to support a vote of no confidence in CCP. http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1536495&page=81#2408

Some pilots have suggested that the player community spend more time on the test server to help prevent these broken patches. Here's my two cents. I pay to play a game. I expect the game to function. If I'm expected to test the game then I'm not going to pay for the time I spend in testing their software. I get paid to test software at work. Why would I want to pay CCP my subscription fees AND help them test their product. That's double-dipping. If CCP needs that much help testing their software (and obviously they do) then they need to either hire more testers or pass out game time compensation to the subscribers who do help test. Spend five hours testing? Great! Let's give the player five hours of free game time. (A whole day would be better since most employed adults can't spend five hours at once online goofing off.)

I've played several MMO's over the years. I am sick and tired of these software companies breaking things over and over and expecting the community to just live with it. Other industries would never get away with it. Why do we let the MMO companies get away with it? My subscription ends on August 10th.

I am not amused.

Fly safe.

How to Help Japan

There are several relief organizations listed in this news article.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/11/how-to-help-japan-earthquake-relief_n_834484.html

My prayers go out to the people of Japan.

ISK 3.0 - EVE Online Guide of Awesomesauce

Link to the official news report: http://www.eveonline.com/news.asp?a=single&nid=4381&tid=1

Link to the guide: http://content.eveonline.com/marketing/isktheguide/ISK_3.0_Lite_Incursion.zip

The guide is very thorough. It begins on February 19, 2011 at midnight (server time) and runs through February 28th.

Official Hulkageddon IV web site: http://hulkageddon4.machine9.net

For those of you new to this event, pirate-type players in EVE will attempt to kill as many mining vessels, orcas, freighters, haulers, noctis and primae as they can during the given time frame. These attacks include high security systems. Pilots will suicide their ships to Concord in their attempts to get kills.

If you are a miner, you might consider using caution during Hulkageddon. If you are a macro-miner, you're going to ignore the event and get what you deserve...popped.

I had to chuckle last summer during Hulkageddon III. I flew through Abudban frequently to get from Rens to the faction warefare playground. Once in a while I stopped in the ice belt to take a peek. Usually there were several pods and wrecks. The afk miners didn't even know they'd lost their ships yet. LOL The pods just sat there...sometimes for hours. Ah well.

EVE provides such a sandbox environment that players can set up events like this that touch the entire community. Regardless of your opinion of pirates/griefers, you have to admit that it is pretty darn cool. The generosity of other EVE players can be truly touching. *big hugs*

I thought I should update this post directly to avoid confusion. Another person in the household has agreed to let me borrow their PC while they are at work. So, I can still see all the wonderful graphics and PvP but only on certain days and times. It might be a good thing to limit my PvP time so I can restock my hanger after a few days of explosions. LOL It's all good!

Many thanks again to those who offered to toss hardware my direction. (I'm definitely more of a software and data geek than a hardware tech.) I am humbled.

Incursion 1.1.0

Patch Notes for EVE Online: Incursion 1.1.0
http://www.eveonline.com/updates/patchnotes.asp

Changes to CPU Requirements with Incursion 1.1.0
http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=844

What fresh hell is this? A friend of mine offered to let me borrow his (which was nicely rigged). I warped to the first field of wrecks and found none. Odd. I turned on all brackets and I could see the wrecks in space but none appeared on my overview. Funky. I opened the overview settings and selected every item in every category. The wrecks still weren't on the overview. Interesting.

I wandered out to the internet and searched to see if others were having the same problem. I found the following post. (Note that it is over 90 days old.)

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1246728

Shatner19 said he solved the issue by toggling states, member is in alliance. My wrecks showed up when I toggled states, member is in corporation. I was worried that I'd forgotten how to play the game in the two weeks I was gone. A timer will display in the upper left corner of your screen. The text is red.

When you have combat aggression, a timer will display in the upper left corner of your screen. The text is yellow. Mouse over the text to read the names of pilots or NPC's you are aggressed to.

Please read the official information regarding activities that flag you for aggression and/or Global Criminal.
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Criminal_Flagging_System

Note: In 0.0, there is no aggression timer displayed. This does not mean the aggression timer is not active. (CSM has asked CCP to change this.)

"REMEMBER: You must be online for the 15 minutes it takes for the aggression timer to count down. You can´t log out, wait out the timer, and then log in again."

Combat Aggression Timer (60 Seconds)

The combat aggression timer will come into effect at any time you have performed an aggressive action against another pilot. This timer will prevent you from docking or using star gates. Note that the timer will count from the last aggressive action you did.

PvP Log Off Timer (15 Minutes)

The PvP log off timer is triggered by any aggressive action a pilot takes or is taken against him. If a pilot with an active PvP log off timer logs out from the game, his ship will remain in space for 15 minutes afterward. This timer will renew for the capsule, should the ship be destroyed within those 15 minutes after logging off.

NPC Combat Log Off Timer (2 Minutes)

This timer functions the same way as the PvP log off timer except it only lasts 2 minutes. It only applies if the PvP timer is not in effect and the pilot has engaged in combat with NPCs in the last 2 minutes.

Non-Combat Log Off Timer (1 Minute)

This timer functions the same way as the PvP log off timer except it only lasts 1 minute. It only applies if neither the PvP or NPC combat log off timers are in effect.

Session Change Timer (30 Seconds)

This timer only comes into effect if the pilot has initiated a session change. A session change is any activity which will cause a change of status for that pilot's character. For example this includes, but is not restricted to boarding ships, undocking and jumping through gates. This timer will prevent another session change from taking place for it entire duration.

Global Criminal Countdown (15 Minutes)

This timer will reset at any time you are spotted again by sentry guns or CONCORD vessels. This means that it will always reset if you warp to a station to dock or to a gate to jump out.

NPC Aggression Timer (15 Minutes)

This comes into effect at any time you engage an NPC entity in combat of any sort. (NPC convoys in secure space will trigger this timer if engaged.)

Resources:
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Combat_Timers
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Aggression_Timer
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Criminal_Flagging_System
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Security_Status

Now back to PvP tactics. Let's say you have a fleet of ten pilots. The FC has warped the fleet to a gate. There are two enemy pilots on the gate but the FC does not know what is on the other side of the gate. (Lack of scout = fail.) The FC orders the fleet to jump. Two pilots decide to engage the enemy pilots. This is where things go wrong.

The eight members of the fleet that jumped into the next system will have to wait out the 30-second session timer before they can go back to help the two cowboys who can't keep their guns holstered. The two cowboys have a 60-second aggression timer and can not jump through the gate to the rest of the fleet until that timer is gone. (Note: The 60-second timer doesn't even start until the aggressor stops ALL aggression. This means guns, web, point, drones...all of it.)

Now the fleet is split in two. The two cowboys are on their own and will likely die. The enemy pilots will have plenty of time to call in support from neighboring systems to beat the snot out of the cowboys. A lot can happen during the 30-second session change timer. If an FC decides to just let the gun-toting cowboys die without making an effort to help, do not be surprised. Just because one or two pilots in a fleet decide to do something silly does not mean that the entire fleet has to pay the price.

A pilot I flew with a couple of years ago compared EVE PvP with the table-top game Hungry Hungry Hippos. That pilot had hoped EVE PvP would be more like chess where strategy and forethought is required. I prefer strategy as well.

Directional Scanner Guide

Here's a link to a nice directional scanner guide including videos.
http://eve.techgamelabs.com/?p=402

Enjoy!

Ammo to Use Against Angel Cartel

Damage to do against Angel Cartel: Explosive / Kinetic / Thermal
Damage to protect against: all (plug ship weaknesses)

Ammo to use:
Projectile: Fusion
Hybrid: Antimatter
Rockets: Phalanx
Light Missiles: Piranha
Heavy Missiles: Havoc
Heavy F.O.F. Every time you jump into a system, your ship will be pointing the same direction. For example, let’s say you jump into Amamake through Osoggur. Every time you jump into Amamake from Osoggur, your ship will be pointed the same direction. Your ship will bobble around for a moment while cloaked and then it will settle.

The advantage is that you can make bookmarks for a quick warp away from the gate. Your ship won’t need the time to align before warp. You will still need to get your ship up to full speed before warp.

I’ve been making most of my “speedy entrance” bookmarks over 450k from the gate so that I align off grid (out of view) of any possible gate campers. I highly recommend making the bookmarks at least 200k from the gate. You need to be 150k away from a point in space before you can warp to it.

Fly a fast frigate or interceptor in order to make these bookmarks.

Jump into the desired system.

Hold your cloak.

Wait for your ship to stop bobbling.

Accelerate in the direction your ship is pointed. (Deviations will booch the bookmark)

Get at least 200k from the gate to make a bookmark.

Make bookmarks at over 450k from the gate to try to be out of sight while aligning to your next gate.

PvP Pre-Flight Checklist

Subject: Pre-Flight Checklist

Target Audience: Minmatar Militia

OVERVIEW > Filter Tab >>States Tab >>>UN-CHECK THE FOLLOWING:
Pilot is in your alliance, corporation, fleet, militia, good standing, high standing

Example here: http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/7793/ovv2.jpg

Why: If you shoot friendlies during a fleet, several things can happen. First, you'll get scolded by others in the fleet and called horrible names. Second, when you fire on Minmatar Militia pilots you lose standing with Minmatar Republic. If that standing drops under 0.5 you will get a notification from Tribal Liberation Force (NPC corp) that you have 24 hours to correct your standing or you'll get booted from militia. This also affects player corporations.

Overview Columns: Icon, Name, Distance, Type

Why: This allows you to identify ship types fast.
Tip: If you are flying alone and land in the middle of a war target fleet you can always hit Print Screen and get safe. Use the screen shot to provide accurate intel to others.
Screen Shot File Location: My Documents\EVE\capture\Screenshots

Select Move entries with broadcasts to top

Sort your overview by Name

Why: Usually the FC will call out targets by pilot name and ship type. Sorting by pilot name helps you find the appropriate pilot quickly.

Set your CSPA to 0 isk. Open mail > right-click white triangle @ top left > Settings, General CPSA > 0

Why: While you have a CSPA charge, the person inviting you to fleet has to pay that charge. It also slows down the invitation process by popping up extra windows.

Auto-return target 0

Why? If you have a remote repair ship in your fleet and you automatically target it, there is a high probability you will shoot at it. Don't shoot friendlies!

EVE Voice: On (No Voice, No Fleet)
Note: Scouts must have voice and mic

• Insure your ship
• Make sure your clone is up-to-date
• Fly only what you can afford to lose. You will lose ships in militia. Getting mad about it is pointless.
• Remove the pilot name from your ship name. (This prevents the enemy from easily identifying you using the directional scanner.)
• Ammunition
• Drones
• Valuables out of cargo
• Scouts on fleet watch list
• Be sure you can hear the FC
• Open your local window on your screen so you can see which pilots are in system with you.

Faction Warfare Resources

Official Faction Warfare Information Page:
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Faction_Warfare_Resources

Faction Warfare on the EVE Uni Wiki:
http://www.eve-ivy.com/wiki/index.php?title=Factional_Warfare

Faction Warfare Statistics:
http://fwstats.eve-ic.net/

Fleet Information:
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Fleet

Minmatar Militia Killboards:
http://www.minmatar-militia.org/kb/?a=home
http://minmatar.eve-kill.net/?a=home

Maps:
http://evemaps.dotlan.net/
http://www.ombeve.co.uk/

Helpful pages in Ombey's Maps:
